The tutorial this Monday (14/11/11) will be somewhat of a discussion type deal ran by Nick and myself. We’re going to be starting our first project for the year, a live action capture the flag game around Plymouth. The idea behind the project is to stick QR/numbered stickers around town as ‘flags’, and the goal is for each team to capture (scanning using a mobile app most likely, or perhaps texting in an identifier as quite a few people don’t have smartphones) as many flags as they can and hold them for as long as possible. We’re gonna go over the concept and details properly on Monday, have a proper discussion about it and hopefully start building! Usual time and place, hope to see you guys there!

Hey all

The meeting yesterday went pretty well, thanks to all that attended! We had a lot of good discussion. You can check out the minutes here: http://termisoc.org/wiki/2011-10-17_-_General_Meeting

The CISS (Computer Information and Security Society) guys are organizing a trip to Bletchley Park for the National Museum of Computing. Bletchely was an important location back in WWII as it was the center of the UK’s decryption program, and where Enigma was cracked. The trip’s most likely taking place on the 19th of November and the estimated cost is around £40. I mentioned it at the tutorial yesterday, and we’ve had a couple of people showing interest for it. Please email me back if you’re interested.

LAN party tickets will be on sale next week, they’ll cost £5 each for Termisoc members and £6 for non-Termisocians. We’ve updated the information on the LAN Party, you can find it all here: http://termisoc.org/events/lan/. If you’re thinking about bringing a console down to the LAN please fill out this poll (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dHRhX1NwUmZScXRYZFZQYkJZeXVxMlE6MQ) so we can better organize who brings what. Don’t want a bunch of people bringing things down that won’t be played on :>

The social this week’s going to be pool at Riley’s, and that’s going to be this Saturday (the 22nd). We’ll send around more details later on.

Hey all,

Just a reminder from my last post:

Our social this week is on Saturday (the 15th), where Stewart’s offered up his wonderful flat for our first bad movie night; we’re watching The Room. If you don’t know what The Room is, you’re in for a treat! Bring along some snacks or drinks, and as per tradition some plastic spoons if possible. We’ll be meeting on the street-facing side of Portland Square on campus at around 6:20pm to walk people up. It’s about a 45 minute walk from campus, but Nat’s being awesome and is giving lifts at about 6:30 from PSQ. So if you pop down early enough, you should able to shotgun a lift with him.

We have our first open TermiSoc meeting on Monday at 6pm in BBG 105, where we’ll be discussing plans for the year and the general future of TermiSoc, so do pop down if you want to join in.
At 7pm, after the meeting, Ross and Gem will be giving their ‘Programming: Absolute Basics’ tutorial. It should be pretty handy and informative for anyone getting into computing/programming.

I’m probably going to put the order through for the T-shirts on Tuesday, so if you’ve put your name down for one try and get £10 to one of the exec by Monday.

Hey everyone,

We’re meeting on Monday as usual for our workspace this week. As it’s our workspace week, we have nothing really planned apart from hanging out, chatting, and getting on with some work/personal projects (and obviously Voodoo afterwards).

People have shown interest in TermiSoc t-shirts, so we’re getting the sorted out pretty soonish. They’ll be about £10 or less each and there may be the chance of having custom wording on the back. So email me (siddv19@gmail.com) your name, size and wording if you’re interested or let one of us know on Monday.

It’s about a 45 minute walk from campus, but Nat’s being awesome and giving lifts at about 6:30. So if you pop down early enough, you should able to shotgun a lift with him.

We have this year’s first open meeting next Monday (the 17th) at 6pm, before the tutorial. We’ll be talking about the year’s plans and the general future of TermiSoc so pop down if you want to join the conversation and contribute your ideas.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks to all that came last Monday and Tuesday. We had a blast and hope you all did too!

First Talk/Tutorial

We’re hosting the first talk/tutorial today. Nick will be giving an Introduction to Linux and talking over the webspace we provide.

If you’re interested in either, it’ll be great to see you there. Even if you don’t think you’re interested, or feel like you know enough, you might very well learn something!

We’ll see you in Babbage 105 from 7pm. The talk will start from 7:30pm.

LAN Party

We’ve also got dates for out first LAN party! It’ll be on the 5th of November from 10:30 (for setup)/11am to 9pm.

So, get ready to bring your machine down to Sherwell Church Hall! We’ll also have a bunch of consoles and board games. Oh, and projectors!

A little sidenote: If you’re intending to bring down a lot of stuff (like 3 monitors, for example), give one of us a shout and we can make sure you have enough time to get all setup. We’ll also be trying to get a few people together to give people lifts.

A Few Bits of Newsletter Meta

After sending out the first newsletter last week, we’ve gone through and checked for bounces. A few of you had entered incorrect email addresses (it’s easy enough when you’re doing it in a hall on someone’s iPad :p). These (and a few other people) have been added. So, we’re sorry if this is the first email you’re getting. We couldn’t have known until now.

Cheers,
Siddharth Vadgama & Nick Charlton

Welcome to TermiSoc! We had a really good turnout at yesterday’s Societies Fayre and we’ve got some great events planned for this term! The first big event is the introductory social, held downstairs at the Fortescue on Mutley Plain from 8pm on Tuesday 27th. If you’re unsure where the Fortescue is, or just want to walk up with us we’ll have a couple of people outside Portland Square at 7:40. Hope to see you there!

This is TermiSoc’s 20th year and from LAN parties to tutorials, socials to outings we’ve got some great events planned. We’re always open to new ideas for tutorials, especially if someone is passionate about running one, so if you have something you’d like to see a tutorial on, add it to the list. We’re currently talking to and hope to be working with the Computer Information and Security Society, Exeter Hackerspace and members of PCAD to provide further opportunities to our members, such as more outings, trips, adventures, expeditions and talks. Check out our events calendar for details further details on our upcoming shenanigans (dates for the first LAN party should be confirmed tomorrow).

On Mondays we run an open workspace, often with tutorials, talks and challenges. Our first workspace is being held at 7pm this evening in room 105 of the Babbage building on campus, while nothing formal is planned you’re all more than welcome to come along! All TermiSoc events are open to non-members (unless explicitly stated); so if you signed up to the mailing list but haven’t joined TermiSoc yet or have friends you want to bring along, you’re more than welcome.

It’s also worth signing up to TermiList, a mailing list members can post to directly – you’ll often see unofficial meet-ups, local job opportunities and technical oddities looking for a new home (including the occasional server!) It’s also a great place to ask for help with coursework or studies, with many people (including graduates and academics) who are more than happy to help out.

Finally a big thanks to everyone for coming along to the Societies Fayre, it was a really fun day and it was great to meet you all!
