Veggie Perrins! Thursday!

Posted by TermiSoc on April 11, 2011

As you may know, I’m planning to book Veggie Perrin’s for a combined birthday maelstrom. It will be Thursday Evening, likely around 8pm. Veggie Perrin’s is a really good Vegetarian Indian restaurant on Mayflower Street, down the road from Iceland.

What I need to know is how many people are coming. I’ll need to know by tomorrow afternoon.

Drop me an email/tweet/letter/carrier pigeon/telegram/smoke signal and let me know if your coming – and do come – it will be awesome!

Chris

Veggie Perrins! Thursday!

Posted by TermiSoc on April 11, 2011

Hey all! Hope you all doted on your mothers yesterday!

Now This really only counts to those still in Plymouth, but for those of you that are still down here, Spcs has got a few movies for you all to enjoy over the Easter period.
We have the gruesome Human Centipede. And for those that don’t have a strong enough stomach for that there is Moon, Wonders of the solar System, 9, back to the future (1-3) some others he can’t remember, and any that you guys might have that you’d like to show case. Spcs will only be showing these those if you guys give him a poke about it. He’s also willing to do private/midnight screenings if people really really want. So don’t waste an opportunity to keep him up all night!

Hope you guys have a good Easter holiday and we’ll see you all when you get back! And don’t forget to start stocking up on Pokemon cards! As the Event will be not too long after you guys get back!

Veggie Perrins! Thursday!

So, deadlines deadlines deadlines. I know you’re all skipping off for the easter break (lucky). But for those of you still loitering about this Thursday ( or don’t have a deadline Friday (or those that have completed their work for deadlines on Friday)) there will be a film of some description over at Spcs house. I will get back to you on the film when I find one.

Also, we have some updates for the Pokemon Event.

It will be held on the 7th of May, if you’re interested and can’t make it, let us know.

Entry will be ?3, and we will be opening this up to any interested non-termisoc for a ?5 entry fee. (so if you have non-termisoc friends who like pokemon, they can come along too!)

There will be a Pokemon Card Tournament that will have a prize at the end.
There will also be the opportunity to battle and trade on the DS (and for those that bought it, show off the 3DS)
We will see about getting some TV’s down and some N64′s and have a good old rumble on Pokemon Stadium.
There will be food and drink provided.

There may be the opportunity to watch some episodes of Pokemon, but we need to check what our broadcasting licence is with this first.

Don’t forget if you wanna join the card tournament and have the chance to win your own deck and boosters, Lefishy and Beth have both agreed to put decks together using their extensive collection for others to use at the tournament.

The place and times will be confirmed once we are sure about Venue.

The application forms for Google Summer of Code 2011 are now up.

If you don’t know what it is, GSOC is a mentoring project setup by Google with the aim of pairing up student programmers with Open Source projects and providing both a deadline and a mentor to help you along the way.

As you can tell by the year, it’s run every year. But, if you’re interested on working on an Open Source project (especially one that you use often) this is probably the best time to have a look into it. It’ll certainly look good on your CV.

From a quick browse, I can see stuff from AI, to C & C++ programming, to OS Emulation stuff to Games.

You can find the list of organisations here: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/program/accepted_orgs/google/gsoc2011
The GSOC FAQs here: http://www.google-melange.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2011/faqs
And you probably want to read the Dos and Don’ts too: http://google-opensource.blogspot.com/2011/03/dos-and-donts-of-google-summer-of-code.html

I’m probably going to apply to something for Summer. So if you have any questions, give me a shout.

Nick

Veggie Perrins! Thursday!

Posted by TermiSoc on April 11, 2011

So sorry guys about the lack of socials recently. With the prep for Minamicon17 I lost all track of time and will to live with sewing and the shiz.
I wont be planning a social this Thursday as there is the Twestival on down at Plymouth Albion, more information can be found here.

Also MTG are putting on Sweeney Todd between the 22nd and 26th so support our fellow students and give that a whirl!
Find out more and to book go here

If there is anything in particular you guys wanna do as a social feel free to email me about it, you can also post suggestions on the Termisoc facebook page, or @termisoc on twitter.
We’re here to put on the events that you want. So we need to know the things you want to do.

One thing that you may have seen floating on your emails is the idea of a Pokemon Card Tournament. After a bit of discussion we thought about expanding this a little further.
We’re going to be setting up a Pokemon Event. Where you can battle your cards, or your pokemon on your DS’s. We will also be bringing in some consoles so we can battle it out on the N64 as well.
There will be prizes up for grabs. There will also be a small fee to enter, don’t let this put you off though! If you wanna be involved in the card tournemant but don’t have any cards, Lefishy and Beth have both kindly agreed to put together decks for you guys to use from their immense collection.
The date for this will be confirmed some time next week. So keep your eyes peeled!

Veggie Perrins! Thursday!

I figured it would be a good idea to tell you about what I intend to do this evening. Amazingly, we’ve now been doing this for about 6 weeks.

But anyway; the intention of this evening is to (once again) try and build something using Python. I’ve talked a little about this as I couldn’t think of what would be a good idea to do, but Sidd has gone off and build a text based adventure game. As it covers pretty much everything you’d need to know, I figured this would be a good place to start.

I intend to start at about 6:30 this evening so we have enough time.

By about 8:30, I figure that we should start showing them off, however unfinished. We also need to start to talk about what we’d like to  build. So, get your thinking caps on as I’ll be asking about that too.

I am just in the process of adding load arguments, exception handling, file handling and a little bit on databases to the guide I am writing. If anyone wants anything else, give me as shout.

Luke has said he may be willing to set up some decks from his abundance of pokemon cards should people be interested and not have any cards.

It would be great if I could have at least 8 people interested?
Prize will be a deck of pokemon cards. So if you’re interested, but don’t have cards, throw myself and Luke an email and he might be willing to help.

So far I?ve only had a couple of people say yes to this. So if you ARE interested, please raise your voice, or I wont be able to make it happen.

Another idea for those with Pokemon on your DS?, would be to run a Pokemon tournemant on the DS as well. So if people could raise their voices about this would be awesome.

So been having a little think, and with the release of Pokemon Black and White, and the re-rise in popularity for Pokemon cards, I was wondering how many people would be interested in a Pokemon card Tournament? Throw me a message if you’re interested.

I won’t be talking in tomorrow’s Workspace (I’m neither prepared, or think many of you will be there). I figured instead that we could do some stuff with Python, and possibly try and build something simple. I may however talk a little about the packaging system and some of Python’s nice built in data structures, as you should really know about both.

Give me a shout if any of you have any ideas, then I can plan around that.

The other idea is that we spend the end of the evening showing off a project. Do any of you have something you’d like to show off? Can even be just an idea that we can throw some ideas at.

Otherwise tomorrow night is the Game Dev Meet. If you have any interest in that I suggest you go along. You can find more about it here

Don’t forget guys, it’s a film at Spcs’ tonight! I’ll be waiting outside Portland square at 7 for those that want to come along, and Nate has kindly offered lifts over to Spcs’ house. The planned film is Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva ( as I think this is an amazing film if I say so myself ), but if that doesn’t tickle anyone’s fancy we also have Despicable Me or Kick Ass. So if you don’t really want to see the former, but would like to see one of the latter, give me a shout, and we’ll put it to a vote. Hope to see you there outside PSQ or directly at Spcs for 7:30!
